Bows have become the signature of the modern Christmas tree because they do something ornaments can't: they add color and texture without clutter. The good news is that a bow tree is one of the fastest looks to pull off. Here is the order that works.
What you need
- A 6 to 7.5 ft tree, real or artificial
- Warm white string lights
- One large topper bow with long tails
- About 20 to 30 small bows for a full tree, all in the same shade
1. Hang the lights first
Lights always go on before anything else. Weave them deep into the branches so the cords disappear and the bows sit on top.
2. Place the topper bow
Secure the center of the topper bow at the very top of the tree. Let the two tails fall down the front in loose lines. Don't pull them straight; a slight curve looks more natural.
3. Spiral the small bows
Start just under the topper and work down in a loose spiral, placing a bow every 8 to 10 inches. Twist ties make this quick: wrap them around a branch and you're done.
4. Fill the gaps
Step back across the room and look for empty patches. Add your last few bows there, slightly deeper in the branches, so the tree feels full from every angle.
5. Fluff every bow
Velvet bows can flatten in storage or shipping. Pull each loop open with your fingers. For stubborn creases, a few minutes in a steamy bathroom helps.
Our tip: keep to one shade
The trees that look most expensive usually stick to one bow color. Pair red or burgundy velvet with warm white lights and let the bows do the work.
